WHO PUT THAT ICEBERG HERE?
LAS VEGAS, NV- According to polls the majority of Americans think our Nation is currently on the wrong path and believe November is the time to replace those responsible. “Shelley Berkley has been busy voting to increase taxes on small businesses while failing to regulate the culprits of our economic crisis,” said Ken Wegner the Republican nominee for Congressional District 1.
Mr. Wegner added, “what else can you expect when her campaign is funded by two of the principal culprits responsible our current economic crisis, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.” Wegner states that he is proud to be running for congress with a campaign funded 100% by individual contributions. “I do not accept money from PACs, lobbyists, or other special interest; because I understand that under our constitutional government I represent the people, and will not allow my office to be suspect of anything else.” Many voters believe the current members of congress caused our economic crisis through their anti business agenda, and they should not be entrusted to lead us out of this crisis.
Mr. Wegner compares the current decision facing voters to the Titanic disaster. He states, “On April 10, 1912 the RMS Titanic set off on her maiden voyage as the largest passenger steamship in the world. Just four days later she struck an iceberg and sank resulting in the deaths of over 1,500 people.” Similar to the Titanic, our economy is the world’s largest economy and liberals put it on a dangerous course doomed to collide with their anti business pro union platform. Wegner asks, “would rescue ships that arrived at the tragic scene to help victims of the Titanic be expected to allow the Titanic’s former Captain or chief officers steer their rescue ships out of the iceberg field and back to their home ports?” It is absolute insanity to expect these members of congress, who have had their political careers funded by these lobbyists, to now find the honor and principle to guide us out of the crisis they created.
The collapse of the housing market is an example of how campaign contributions from special interests can lead to corruption capable of causing systemic and catastrophic failures in government. Our economic crisis began when the failure of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae caused the collapse of the housing market. These two government-sponsored enterprises took advantage of preferential government treatment to grow until they held over half of the nation’s mortgages. Members of congress responsible for regulating these government-sponsored enterprises fought any attempts to increase regulation. In 2003 Congressional Republicans began working on a regulation bill. For the next four years liberals stalled attempts to regulate, during which time Fannie and Freddie nearly doubled in size, buying another $2 trillion in mortgages. Incredibly, liberals are on record stating “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it;” democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters stated, “We do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac, and in particular Fannie Mae.”
It is a huge conflict of interest when members of congress like Shelley Berkley have their campaign funded by these enterprises. Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd’s campaign received more donations from Freddie and Fannie than any other member of congress, but then again he was the chairman of the committee charged with regulating the two enterprises. “Americans should be disgusted to watch the news and see Senator Dodd and Congressman Frank emerge from the White House to discuss with reporters the massive banking bill they are currently writing,” explained Kenneth Wegner. The unpopular Senator Dodd is finishing his final term in office after it was learned that he personally received preferential home loans from now bankrupt Countrywide Mortgage, another bank he was entrusted to regulate.
“This is the ultimate in hypocrisy, liberals want us to believe that these members who have been bought off by banks should now be trusted to do the right thing, talk about allowing the fox to guard the hen house,” explained Mr. Wegner. Instead of regulating, Shelley Berkley and her liberal allies in congress were busy cashing campaign contributions from Freddie Mac and Fannie May. When you take contributions from the architects of our economic crisis you cannot properly regulate them. They were not only paid to look the other way, but they actively blocked any attempt by others to regulate the obvious problems that existed.
Many of our current politicians were elected when America had a strong economy and was experiencing relative peace and stability. Today, America needs real leadership capable of facing our Nation’s challenges. Gone are the days when any politician with a catchy campaign slogan and a warm handshake will suffice. Shelley Berkley supported positions and cast votes that resulted in our economic collapse whether based on calculation or innocent ignorance we cannot afford two more years of this kind of leadership. “I am running for congress because I believe that Americans deserves leaders who represent our needs, protect our interests, and fight for our freedoms,” concluded Wegner.
